Reverse bay parking is included in the UK driving test to assess your ability to control the car while reversing and accurately position it within a parking bay. It’s a common manoeuvre you'll use in many car parks, so getting it right is crucial for everyday driving.
By mastering this skill, you’ll feel more confident in your overall driving abilities, knowing that you can handle one of the more challenging aspects of parking.
Step-by-Step Guide to 45° Reverse Bay Parking
Let’s walk through the process of reverse bay parking step by step. We’ve broken it down to make it as simple and straightforward as possible.
1. Position Your Car Correctly
The first step is to align your car straight and close to the parking bays. You want to position your vehicle parallel to the bays, leaving enough room to manoeuvre into your chosen bay. This is crucial because starting from the correct position makes the entire process much easier.
Use your side mirrors to check that you’re parallel with the bay lines. You don’t want to be too far from the bays or too close, as this can make reversing more difficult.

2. Choose Your Bay and Use Your Nearside Mirror
Next, pick the bay you intend to reverse into. It’s important to choose your bay early so you can position your car accordingly. Use your nearside (left) mirror as a reference point to help guide your positioning.
As you approach your chosen bay, start turning the steering wheel slightly in preparation for the reverse. The key here is to move slowly and make gentle adjustments with the steering wheel. This will help you keep control of the car as you begin to reverse.
Another great guide would be getting your shoulders in line with the centre of your bay.
3. Check All Around Before You Start Moving
Before you start moving, it’s essential to check all around your car to ensure it’s safe to proceed. Look out for pedestrians, other vehicles, and any obstacles that might be in your way.
Performing these checks helps prevent accidents and ensures that you’re aware of your surroundings.
Once you’ve confirmed it’s safe, begin moving slowly. Turn the steering wheel full lock away from your chosen bay.
Once you have turned almost straight (but not quite) to the bay, stop and look for the tops of your bay lines in your side mirrors.
Keep looking around for those pesky pedestrians and cars trying to spoil your driving test
4. Straighten Up and Reverse Back
Select reverse and continue to keep those observations going. Straighten the steering and now reverse back straight towards your bay. As your nearside rear wheel get close to the left line on your bay get ready for your next turn of the wheel.
5. Turn Into the Bay
As your car starts to enter the bay, it’s time to turn the steering wheel full lock to the right. Keep reversing slowly and check your left mirror (briefly remember the car can’t jump) to make sure you’re going into your bay. As soon as you know it is going in, keep the speed slow and look out those windows
6. Straighten the Car and Make Final Adjustments
As your car starts to straighten within the bay, straighten the steering wheel again. This helps ensure that your car is perfectly aligned within the bay. Continue reversing slowly until your car is fully within the bay lines and centred.
7. Complete the Parking Process
Once you’re satisfied with your positioning, it’s time to finish the parking process. Apply the handbrake to secure the car. If you’re driving an automatic, select ‘Park.’ If you’re in a manual car, shift into neutral. Finally, double-check your positioning to ensure your car is correctly parked within the bay lines.
Congratulations! You’ve Successfully Parked!
Common Mistakes to Avoid
When learning to reverse bay park, there are a few common mistakes that learners often make. Here’s how to avoid them:
• Overusing Mirrors: While it’s crucial to use your mirrors, it’s just as important not to get “stuck” staring at them. Some learners develop a habit of fixating on their mirrors, especially when reversing. Remember, mirrors are there to give you a reference, not to be the sole focus of your attention. The danger can come from all directions—be sure to keep your head moving, looking around, and scanning your surroundings. You don’t need to stare to see a car or pedestrian coming close—if you see it, act on it promptly and safely.
• Rushing the Manoeuvre: It’s natural to want to get the manoeuvre over with, but rushing can lead to mistakes. Take your time, move slowly, and focus on accuracy rather than speed.
• Incorrect Steering Timing: Steering too early or too late can cause you to miss the bay. Practice makes perfect here—over time, you’ll develop a feel for the right timing.
